Building Community: Peter Cooper’s Year-In-Review

Thanks to Case Manager Debra Anderson, we have an exceptional “Year-In-Review” to share. Debra documented Peter Cooper’s 2018 highlights, and as you’ll see, community-building is something our Adult Services staff and residents are truly mastering:

For the residents of Peter Cooper, 2018 proved to be a successful year of building community relationships. We’re looking forward to building on these relationships in 2019! One of our goals this year is to continue to provide opportunities for our residents to experience the true meaning of giving back to our community and how rewarding that can be. Their contributions are valuable – and something to be proud of. Here are some highlights:

• Dalton and his riding coach Caitlyn: Dalton began riding several months ago at Smithfield Stable in Falmouth. Caitlyn suggested Dalton participate in the Special Olympics Equestrian Event, where he received 2 Gold Medals!

• New Bedford Whalers flag football: 1st Place at the State Qualifier! Eric, Dalton, and Matthew enjoy participating in Special Olympics sports. This winter, they are enjoying basketball with the same group of unique teammates.

• Eric at Peace for Ponies with Director Kendra Bond: Four of the individuals at Peter Cooper love volunteering at this wonderful animal rescue shelter. Eric loves it so much that he presented Kendra with a homemade ceramic pony!

• Meeting our local Wareham firefighters in the control center: Fireman Dan gave our guys the VIP Tour after we dropped off some goodies to thank them for their service to our community.

• Yoga class: Stephanie, Eric, and Matt enjoyed a yoga class given by Nadia Shutkufski, certified yoga instructor (and daughter of Case Manager Debra Anderson). They loved it and are looking forward to a return visit from Nadia.

• Wareham Garden Club: Luncheon for new member Stephanie H., who has been an active member since last February and has made so many new friends. Stephanie attends a monthly business meeting, followed by a garden demonstration and fellowship.

• Gardening Community: Received FIRST Place Award with our Valley Farm Garden Community at the 4th of July Parade! Peter Cooper enjoyed garden tomatoes all summer from their own garden plot, as well as volunteering to maintain the Bourne Food Pantry Garden. They joined fellow gardeners at the summer barbecue enjoying garden delights, too!
